Interesting offseason: Gary Sheffield's shoulder is healthy, and he is ready to collect his 500th homer after an eventful winter. The Tigers' designated hitter met President Barack Obama on Oct. 20 at Legends Field in Tampa two weeks before the election. They talked briefly, and Sheffield recalled his feelings after the election. "It was hard to describe the emotions of that -- seeing something you never thought you'd see," he said. Ready to run: Leyland said his team must improve its baserunning, with everything from taking an extra base to steals. Detroit was last in the American League with 63 steals in 2008. "We were a below-average team last year that has to be at least average," Leyland said, "and that's a big step. It's about taking advantage of what you can take advantage of."
