Right-hander Justin Verlander and the Detroit Tigers have agreed to a one-year, $3,675,000 contract, more than seven times his $500,000 salary last season, avoiding arbitration. His five-year contract had included a $3.15 million signing bonus and $600,000 salary in 2009. It said he could terminate the deal if he had enough service time to qualify for arbitration. Verlander wanted $4.15 million for the season, while the Tigers countered with $3.2 million. He was 11-17 with a 4.84 ERA and 163 strikeouts in 201 innings last season.
