In all likelihood, Justin Verlander and Edwin Jackson will start those first two games against the Blue Jays. Both line up perfectly for those dates by pitching on their scheduled fifth day the rest of the way, have credentials and, lately, have looked strong.
Jackson pitched four scoreless innings in Monday's 7-6 loss to the Boston Red Sox in front of a record crowd of 8,278 at City of Palms Park.
Who pitches after Verlander and Jackson must be decided.
Armando Galarraga will start along with Jeremy Bonderman, as long as Bonderman avoids any shoulder setbacks in the final two weeks. But will Nate Robertson, who has pitched seven consecutive scoreless innings in his past two outings, or rookie Rick Porcello get the fifth spot? Might Zach Miner slide back into the rotation?
"I thought I knew my rotation," Leyland said before the game. "I don't.
"Is Dontrelle Willis in the mix? I don't know.
"Is Bondo going to be ready? I don't know.
"Is Robertson going to start? I don't know.
"Is Porcello going to make it? I don't know."
He sat in the dugout, tapping a bat on the floor as he spoke.
"It's been frustrating," Leyland said.
But soon, he should be able to answer the questions he posed.
Galarraga returns from more than three weeks with Team Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic. He will pitch in today's camp game on a Grapefruit League off-day, along with Bonderman and Willis.
It will be Bonderman's second game action coming off two scoreless innings against the Atlanta Braves, and he will throw about 45 pitches.
