Royals ace masters Tigers
KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Maybe in five years Detroit Tigers rookie pitcher Rick Porcello will be where Royals starter Zack Greinke is today.

quot;I think anybody would,quot; Porcello said. quot;He's pretty good, to say the least. I know he's a heck of a pitcher and he's tough on a lot of teams. I didn't get to see everything he was doing. I was focused in my own little world trying to stay focused. He's tough.quot;

Greinke like Porcello, made his big league debut at the age of 20. He has not allowed an earned run this season as he defeated the Tigers 6-1 on Friday night, pitching a complete-game three-hitter.

The 25-year-old Greinke went 38 scoreless innings, dating to last year, before the Tigers scored an unearned run in the fifth. Gerald Laird led off the Detroit fifth with a double. When Josh Anderson flied to center for the second out, Laird moved to third and came home on shortstop Mike Aviles' errant relay throw.

That was all the offense the Tigers could create off Greinke, who is 4-0 and leads the majors with 36 strikeouts. He walked one and struck out 10.

In six innings, Porcello limited the Royals to four hits, but two were home runs. He yielded a two-run homer to Mark Teahen in the first.

The stunner, however, came when Alberto Callaspo hit an 0-1 pitch out to right for his first big league home run. He ended a 441 at-bat homer-less drought, which was the longest among active major league players.

quot;Both were elevated and they put good swings on them,quot; Porcello said.

Manager Jim Leyland said he was quot;very encouragedquot; by Porcello's outing.

quot;This is kind of on-the-job training for him,quot; Leyland said.

Just like it was for Greinke in 2004-05.

quot;Greinke dominated us,quot; Leyland said. quot;We just didn't do anything off him. I was pleased with our pitching, but we just got dominated by probably the hottest pitcher in the American League.

quot;When Greinke is pitching, the Royals are as good any team in Baseball. There are not a lot of teams that would have beat Greinke tonight.quot;

Porcello, who was replaced by left-hander Nate Robertson to start the seventh, was charged with five runs, four earned, while walking two and striking out four.

Bonine sent down

The Tigers optioned rookie right-hander Eddie Bonine to Triple-A Toledo after the game. Bonine was sent to the minors to make room for Joel Zumaya, who is coming off the 15-day disabled list Saturday.

Zumaya had been out with a sore shoulder. Bonine has no decisions and a 9.00 ERA in four relief appearances.
