Knapp said he will place the 4-foot-by-8-foot mirror, attached to plywood, in the bullpen as an instructional tool.
"I think it's pretty good," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "With some guys, it will help. I'm anxious to see it."
Detroit reliever Juan Rincon, who was coached by Knapp in the Minnesota Twins' farm system, said the mirror is only the beginning.
"Rick has a ton of tools," Rincon said. "He will get an 8-foot board from Home Depot and have you complete your delivery on it to learn balance. He will have a wall with the strike zone on it and have holes for you on the corners to throw at.
"Rick will put a dummy batter in the box to simulate a batter. And he has this ball on a stick. You don't throw the ball. But you go through your delivery, and if you go too far back the stick bends."
Do the coaching tools work?
"What you find is that the toy may help you," Rincon said.
DETROIT WILL HAVE its first full-squad workout today. Leyland said he expects no delayed players, noting that the only player with any restrictions is outfielder Clete Thomas, who won't be throwing until the end of camp while recovering from Tommy John surgery on his elbow.
LEYLAND SAID that with no more than one southpaw in the starting rotation, he is open to having perhaps more than the expected two left-handed relievers among 12 pitchers. Bobby Seay is a virtual lock, and other lefty relievers in camp are Rule 5 draft pick Kyle Bloom, Macay McBride, Clay Rapada and non-roster invitee Fu-Te Ni. McBride and Rapada have big league experience, and Detroit must keep Bloom on its 25-man roster all season or return him to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
