Indians INSIDER

Struggling shortstop Jhonny Peralta did not start Friday night against the Tigers and probably will not start tonight, either.

His status for Sunday? Only Indians manager Eric Wedge knows.

"I'm thinking about giving him a couple of days to catch his breath a little bit," Wedge said Friday afternoon. "We'll play it day by day. I've talked with him. He wants to play, but he understands."

Entering Friday, Peralta was batting .210 with one homer and 10 RBI in 25 games. He had 33 strikeouts and nine walks. He had gone 8-for-63 (.127) in his past 15 games.

"He's really fighting it right now - offensively and a little bit defensively," Wedge said. "[A benching] is something we've done with him before that's helped him out. When you get into a bad groove, you find yourself repeating bad habits. It's a lot easier to get into those habits than to get out of them."

Peralta, a career .268 hitter with 85 homers in 681 major-league games through 2008, can be difficult to read because his emotions rarely fluctuate between the lines.

"He wears it more than people know," Wedge said. "Just because he's even-tempered doesn't mean he's not feeling it inside."

Asdrubal Cabrera batted second and played short for the second straight game. Thursday at Boston, Peralta batted seventh and went 1-for-4 as the designated hitter in a 13-3 loss.

Taking a look: Well-traveled reliever Luis Vizcaino threw a bullpen session Friday afternoon in front of Indians personnel.

Vizcaino, a right-hander, was designated for assignment by the Cubs on April 23. He eventually was released. He has not pitched in a major-league game since April 21.

As of late Friday afternoon, Wedge said he, General Manager Mark Shapiro and pitching coach Carl Willis still needed to discuss what to do about Vizcaino.

The Indians reportedly signed him to a minor-league contract.

Vizcaino had come to the Cubs in an off-season trade with Colorado. Vizcaino pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings in four appearances.

Asked why the Cubs jettisoned him, Vizcaino said: "I don't know. That's Baseball, just Baseball. It happens." Vizcaino, 34, has played for seven teams in an 11-year career.

Pronk update: Travis Hafner, disabled since April 29 because of right-shoulder soreness, took batting practice indoors Friday.

"I think he's a little bit better," Wedge said. "Hopefully, [the time off] is all he needs."

Welcome to The Show: Matt LaPorta, recalled from Class AAA Columbus on May 2, was 2-for-13 in four games entering Friday.

"The pitchers up here don't miss a lot," he said. "The fastballs are faster, the breaking pitches are sharper. And the strikes are on the corners. It's been an adjustment, but it's coming along."

Honorary Bat Girl: Jennifer Torok of Twinsburg has been selected to be the Indians' "Honorary Bat Girl" for Sunday's game against the Tigers.

MLB and Susan G. Komen For The Cure are using Mother's Day to raise awareness for the annual "Going to Bat Against Breast Cancer" program. The two groups kicked off an online search last month for an "Honorary Bat Girl" - looking for people with stories of inspiration and hope and how they are fighting breast cancer - for each of the 30 major-league teams. More than 1,000 people submitted testimonials.

Torok is a three-year cancer survivor first diagnosed with breast cancer at age 29, three months after giving birth to her first son. Soon after finishing radiation treatment, she and her husband were surprised to find she was pregnant with her second son.

Torok will also be throwing the first pitch.

Late trouble: Of the 178 runs the Indians have allowed entering Friday, 100 had come in the sixth inning or later. They had been outscored, 100-70.
