Basketball playoffs continue

The boys basketball playoffs shift to area-round games this weekend, girls teams are in regionals to determine spots for next week's state tournament, and TAPPS is holding its state tournament.

The St. Michael's boys and Marble Falls Faith Academy girls play state semifinals today. St. Michael's, in the Class 5A draw, will play Addison Trinity at 3:30 p.m. at Mansfield Timberview while Marble Falls Faith (31-6) - making its third straight Class 2A state tournament - faces Shiner St. Paul at 8 p.m. at Fort Worth Nolan. Cedar Park Summit (2A boys) and Central Texas Christian (2A boys) also are in the tournament.

In UIL play, seven area girls teams are still alive heading into today's regional semifinals. That includes District 17-4A rivals Del Valle and Hays, which play in the Region III-4A tournament in Spring Branch. If both win today, they'll face each other in Saturday's regional final.

Pflugerville is the area's lone 5A girls team still playing. Marble Falls (Region IV-4A), Burnet (I-3A), Salado (IV-2A) and Thorndale (IV-A) - which will play its regional at the Burger Center - also remain in play.

Bowie, Westlake wrestlers shine

Bowie, which will field nine wrestlers in this weekend's state tournament, picked up a couple of individual honors at the Region IV meet two weeks ago. Head coach Kevin Smith was named Region IV's coach of the year. Senior Greg Gogonas, who won the 119-pound regional title, was named the outstanding wrestler of the meet. " Westlake qualified eight wrestlers - a school record - for the state meet, including four individual regional champions in juniors Chase Betzer (130 pounds), Sawyer Morris (145), and Peyton Burns (152), and senior Grant Perry (171).

Belton soccer ranked nationally

Belton's boys soccer team is ranked 10th in the nation by ESPN. The Tigers, who are led by University of New Mexico-bound Josh Caffey, have won 18 straight matches. Other Texas teams ranked in the national poll are Dallas Jesuit (No. 1), Garland Sasche (No. 4) and Fort Bend Clements (No. 6). Coppell is ranked No. 11.

Nine make MLB spring rosters

Nine Central Texas products are on major league 40-man rosters: Cincinnati Reds pitcher Homer Bailey (La Grange), Reds pitcher Matt Belisle (McCallum), Detroit Tigers outfielder Brent Clevlen (Westwood), Chicago White Sox pitcher John Danks (Round Rock), Texas Rangers outfielder Brian Gordon (Round Rock), Atlanta Braves infielder Kelly Johnson (Westwood), Washington Nationals outfielder Ryan Langerhans (Round Rock), White Sox pitcher Scott Linebrink (McNeil) and Oakland A's pitcher Huston Street (Westlake).

All-star volleyball players chosen

Five area volleyball players have been selected to play in the Texas Girls Coaches Association's all-star matches on July 15 at the Burger Center during the TGCA's summer clinic.

Hutto's Jessica O'Shoney, Westlake's Elly Barrett and New Braunfels' Andrea Hannasch will play in the 5A/4A game, while Wimberley's Katie Milam and Salado's Danielle Hazzard will play in the 3A/2A/A contest.

N.B. Canyon's Rotzler retires

Longtime New Braunfels Canyon boys basketball coach Kenny Rotzler has retired. He spent 18 years with the Cougars, going 273-256, including a 31-5 record and a regional finals appearance in 2007.

Among his coaching milestones was a district championship in 1995, breaking a 33-year playoff drought.

All-district, All-Centex hoops

Central Texas coaches are urged to submit their All-District teams for future publication as well as make nominations for the American-Statesman's annual All-Central Texas teams.

All-District teams and All-Central Texas nominations should be e-mailed ( or faxed (445-3868). Nominations should include the player's position, class, height, statistics and any other pertinent information.


Hutto volleyball player Angelica Arroyo has signed with Texas Wesleyan. Fellow Hippos player Jessica O'Shoney is headed to the University of Virginia. " Westlake junior linebacker David Durham has committed to Ohio State. He had 64 tackles and five sacks last fall. " Georgetown boys soccer coach Wes Kidd earned his 300th career coaching victory when his Eagles beat Westwood 1-0. " Dripping Springs pitcher and outfielder Kegan Banks has signed to play Baseball for Blinn College. " Trinity University junior Beth Tweedy, a Westwood graduate, recently set a school record in the women's pentathlon, scoring 2,547 points at a meet at the University of Chicago.
