--RHP Edwin Jackson pitched sharp baseball for six innings Monday night but couldn't get out of the seventh. The Tigers have not been generous in scoring runs when Jackson pitches. The game was tied 1-1 at the start of the seventh. Jackson reached a season high of seven strikeouts, was clocked consistently in the upper 90s on the radar gun with his fastball and showed an excellent slider. But a single by 1B Justin Morneau and a walk, an RBI double and a two-run triple to center chased Jackson as the Twins scored five times to take control of the game.
--LF Carlos Guillen was in the outfield Monday night for the second straight game. Guillen has been playing through a bad right Achilles tendon, but the other option against left-handed pitching, Ryan Raburn, made mistakes in right and left field in recent games. That's why manager Jim Leyland is reluctant to put Raburn in the outfield again at this time.
--C Gerald Laird is in his first slump with the Tigers. Laird, who had Sunday off, went 0-for-4 Monday and is now 1-for-21 dating back to early last week. A plus for him, though, is that his hitting woes have not affected his defense. Laird is still calling a good game and not allowing balls to get by him.
--1B Miguel Cabrera showed once again Monday night why it's dicey to pitch to him, even when you supposedly have to. Cabrera came up with nobody on base in the sixth inning of a game in which Minnesota held a 1-0 lead. Yes, he would have been the tying run -- but walking him might have been the wiser choice because he took a low 2-0 fastball from Francisco Liriano and drilled it 414 feet over the fence in left center to tie the score. He now has an eight-game hitting streak.
--RHP Ryan Perry logged his first outing of more than one inning Monday night when he got the last two outs of the eighth and then pitched the ninth inning of a 7-2 loss to Minnesota. Perry threw 10 pitches in cleaning up the eighth but gave up a double and a single for a run in the ninth, only the third time in 12 appearances he has allowed a run.
--LHP Dontrelle Willis, who gave up three runs in five innings in his last outing, is scheduled to make another rehabilitation start for the Toledo Mud Hens on Wednesday at Pawtucket. Willis walked the first two batters he faced, then no more in his five-inning outing. Overall Willis, on the disabled list with an anxiety disorder, is 1-1 with a 4.50 ERA in 18 innings.
MEDICAL WATCH:
C Matt Treanor (torn labrum in right hip) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 24. He had surgery April 30, and is likely out for the season.
DH/OF Marcus Thames (left ribcage muscle strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 19. He won't begin any physical activity for two to four weeks, and he will need a rehab assignment before returning to the Tigers.
LHP Dontrelle Willis (anxiety disorder) went on the 15-day disabled list March 29. The disorder was diagnosed through blood tests. He made a rehab start for Class A Lakeland on April 21, and he started for Class AA Erie on April 26.
RHP Jeremy Bonderman (right rib removal, blood clot surgery in June 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 30. He won't return until he nudges his fastball back up 90 mph on a consistent basis.
