Detroit Tigers Roster Report 2009-05-01
Detroit's bullpen takes on a decided power look with the return of RHP Joel Zumaya from the disabled list, giving manager Jim Leyland a third upper-90s fastball thrower to go with rookie RHP Ryan Perry and closer RHP Fernando Rodney. Zumaya tossed a scoreless inning April 25 in his season debut.

PLAYER NEWS:

--LF Carlos Guillen is hoping to be able to return to the outfield Friday against the Indians. Guillen has started five straight games as the designated hitter and 11 overall because of a sore right Achilles tendon. "It happened the first day of the season," Guillen said. "I don't know if it was the turf, or what it was. But that's when it happened. They say it's tendinitis." Guillen doesn't mind being the DH, but not all the time. "It's not hard," Guillen said, "but it's different. I'm accustomed to being in the field every day. It's hard to stay loose when you DH. One or two days are OK, but not every day."

--1B Miguel Cabrera has cooled off a lot recently. After starting out with a dozen RBIs and hitting close to .500 for two weeks, Cabrera has just two RBIs in 12 games and only four extra-base hits in that span. He was chasing bad pitches for a while, but it could also be that the No. 5 hitter in the lineup, DH/LF Carlos Guillen, is not providing pitchers with any reason to pitch to Cabrera.

--RHP Joel Zumaya worked a pair of scoreless innings Wednesday and conceded afterward he "can't stand" the Yankees. "I can't stand the Yankees, man, and I'm going to go right after them," he said, which may explain why he lit up the radar gun with a three-digit fastball. "But that's just part of this game. I'm going to go right after guys." Zumaya said, "There are little things about them I can't stand. They're just the Yankees. I was throwing strikes and if (100 mph) popped up, that's a real good thing."

--3B Brandon Inge walked and doubled Wednesday and has reached base in all 21 games this season. It equals the streak he had at the beginning of the 2005 season and is tied for seventh by a Tiger since records began being kept full time in 1954. SS Alan Trammell reached base safely in his first 24 games in 1990.

MEDICAL WATCH:

LF Carlos Guillen (sore right Achilles tendon) missed the April 26 game but played as the DH on April 27-30. He might return to the outfield May 1.

C Matt Treanor (torn labrum in right hip) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 24. He will have surgery April 30, and he is expected to miss two to three months.

DH/OF Marcus Thames (left ribcage muscle strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 19. He won't begin any physical activity for two to four weeks, and he will need a rehab assignment before returning to the Tigers.

LHP Dontrelle Willis (anxiety disorder) went on the 15-day disabled list March 29. The disorder was diagnosed through blood tests. He made a rehab start for Class A Lakeland on April 21, and he started for Class AA Erie on April 26.

RHP Jeremy Bonderman (right rib removal, blood clot surgery in June 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 30. He won't return until he nudges his fastball back up 90 mph on a consistent basis.
