Detroit Tigers Roster Report 2009-04-30
Detroit's bullpen takes on a decided power look with the return of RHP Joel Zumaya from the disabled list, giving manager Jim Leyland a third upper-90s fastball thrower to go with rookie RHP Ryan Perry and closer RHP Fernando Rodney. Zumaya tossed a scoreless inning April 25 in his season debut.

PLAYER NEWS:

--3B Brandon Inge doubled home a run Wednesday night and now has reached base in all 21 games Detroit has played this season. Inge also reached base in his first 21 games in 2005. In addition Inge walked Wednesday, and most observers feel his good start is traceable to returning to third base and taking to heart some tips from hitting coach Lloyd McClendon this winter.

--RHP Rick Porcello was roughed up for six runs in the fourth inning Wednesday night, forced to get his sinker too high in the strike zone. "He was wild," manager Jim Leyland said. "He didn't have good command. He left a couple of balls up. He didn't throw enough strikes, basically." Porcello got through the Yankees' batting order once, but the second time they were laying off his sinker, making him bring it up so they could whack it.

--LHP Clay Rapada gave up one of two home runs Yankees RF Nick Swisher hit, one from each side of the plate. Rapada had trouble getting both left-handers and right-handers out Wednesday night when he relieved starting RHP Rick Porcello in the fourth inning. Rapada pitched 1 1/3 innings, which could be out of his comfort zone and is more than manager Jim Leyland would prefer to work him under ideal circumstances.

--CF Curtis Granderson hit a three-run home run in the ninth inning Wednesday night and now has seven home runs this season. Granderson was off to a slow start except for one good spurt this season and is now hitting .241. He's starting to take more pitches and get more good pitches to hit.

--RHP Joel Zumaya worked two solid innings Wednesday night, allowing one hit and striking out one. One Zumaya pitch reached 100 mph, which wouldn't happen if his shoulder was still sore. Manager Jim Leyland told Zumaya after his first inning that he was running him out there for a second. Detroit is off Thursday, so Zumaya will have one day off before possibly pitching again.

--C Matt Treanor's hip surgery is scheduled to be done in New York on Thursday by Dr. Bryan Kelly. Treanor, 0-for-13 this season, was put on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a right hip strain. "They will evaluate the severity of the injury in surgery," Treanor said, "and that will determine how long I'm out. But they are telling me it's probably six to 12 weeks. I tried to gut it out, but it didn't work."

MEDICAL WATCH:

LF Carlos Guillen (sore right Achilles tendon) missed the April 26 game but played as the DH on April 27-29.

C Matt Treanor (torn labrum in right hip) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 24. He will have surgery April 30, and he is expected to miss two to three months.

DH/OF Marcus Thames (left ribcage muscle strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 19. He won't begin any physical activity for two to four weeks, and he will need a rehab assignment before returning to the Tigers.

LHP Dontrelle Willis (anxiety disorder) went on the 15-day disabled list March 29. The disorder was diagnosed through blood tests. He made a rehab start for Class A Lakeland on April 21, and he started for Class AA Erie on April 26.

RHP Jeremy Bonderman (right rib removal, blood clot surgery in June 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 30. He won't return until he nudges his fastball back up 90 mph on a consistent basis.
