Detroit Tigers Roster Report 2009-04-28
Detroit's bullpen takes on a decided power look with the return of RHP Joel Zumaya from the disabled list, giving manager Jim Leyland a third upper-90s fastball thrower to go with rookie RHP Ryan Perry and closer RHP Fernando Rodney. Disabling DH/OF Marcus Thames in the middle of last week would seem to give the green light to more playing time for IF/OF Jeff Larish but in practice most of the DH at-bats have been taken by LF Carlos Guillen because of his Achilles tendon problem. Larish needs more playing time so he understands he doesn't have to chase bad pitches in an effort to impress his manager.

PLAYER NEWS:

--RHP Justin Verlander was dominant for seven innings Monday night to get his first win of the season. Verlander had a fastball that ranged up to 99 mph and his curve was dynamic. "He had electric stuff," RF Magglio Ordonez said. Verlander struck out nine, getting most of them the first time through the order on curves and changeups, then turning it around to fan batters with fastballs the rest of the evening. He retired eight in a row before giving up the two singles to open the eighth. "I really liked the way he pitched," manager Jim Leyland said. "He was nice and easy 93, 94, 95 (mph). And when he needed a little extra, he got it."

--LHP Bobby Seay continues to be an effective late-inning pitcher. Seay was called on in the eighth after RHP Justin Verlander gave up his sixth and seventh hits of the game to open the inning. Seay got two fly-ball outs and a strikeout to choke off the threat. Seay was brought in because two of the first three hitters he could face were left-handed batters.

--1B Miguel Cabrera grounded a first-pitch strike up the middle for an RBI single in the first inning Monday night off LHP CC Sabathia. Cabrera had just one RBI all last week but looked a little more disciplined at the plate Monday. The hit made him 4-for-4 with a home run in his career against Sabathia.

--2B Placido Polanco keyed the Tigers' two scoring innings with doubles Monday night. He doubled in the first inning and scored on 1B Miguel Cabrera's ground single up the middle. CF Curtis Granderson beat out a drag bunt for a single to start the sixth and Polanco smacked his ninth double of the season for a 2-0 lead. Polanco then scored when RF Magglio Ordonez hit a home run.

--RF Magglio Ordonez's first 17 hits this season were all singles but he broke the streak with a solo home run Saturday night and now has two home runs in his last three games. Ordonez hit a two-run shot Monday night that kicked off the railing on top of the fence in right field in the sixth inning. Ordonez said he's been taking extra batting practice recently to get his gap power back, not that he's dissatisfied with hitting to all fields.

--3B Brandon Inge showed how locked in at the plate he is in his first at-bat Monday. Inge yanked two long foul balls to left, then scooted an 0-2 fastball right back up the middle for a single in the second. He also pulled off another highlight-reel defensive play in the ninth, cutting in front of SS Adam Everett to pick a ground ball and start a 5-4-3 double play with runners at the corners and one run already in.

--UT Ryan Raburn was in left field Monday night due to New York starting LHP CC Sabathia. Regular LF Carlos Guillen was the DH as he continues to battle a sore right Achilles' tendon.

--DH Carlos Guillen is slumping and it may have something to do with the fact his right Achilles' tendon is giving him continual problems. He sat out Sunday's game at Kansas City to rest his aching tendon but was in the lineup Monday night as the DH. Guillen went hitless and now is 0-for-11 and batting .212. Guillen has just three extra-base hits -- all doubles -- in 66 at-bats. Manager Jim Leyland said he thought the tendon problem could affect Guillen's swing. "Your feet are pretty important when you hit," Leyland said.

--RHP Fernando Rodney came into another non-save situation Monday night and struggled initially. Rodney, preserving a 4-0 lead, gave up three straight hits to start the ninth before a double play and popup got him out of the jam.

--RHP Zach Miner will have his next start pushed back a few days as manager Jim Leyland takes advantage of a break in the schedule to realign his rotation. He wants to separate Miner and rookie RHP Rick Porcello and Thursday's day off is a convenient time to do it. Miner's next turn would have been Thursday. Leyland is having Miner start Saturday and will keep RHP Armando Galarraga in turn, which will slot him between the two sinkerball pitchers. Porcello starts Wednesday.

MEDICAL WATCH:

LF Carlos Guillen (sore right Achilles' tendon) missed the April 26 game but played as the DH on April 27.

RHP Joel Zumaya (right shoulder soreness) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He began a rehab assignment with Class A Lakeland on April 11, and he moved to Class AAA Toledo on April 17. He was activated April 25.

C Matt Treanor (torn labrum in right hip) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 24. He will need surgery, and he is expected to miss two to three months.

DH/OF Marcus Thames (left ribcage muscle strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 19. He won't begin any physical activity for two to four weeks, and he will need a rehab assignment before returning to the Tigers.

LHP Dontrelle Willis (anxiety disorder) went on the 15-day disabled list March 29. The disorder was diagnosed through blood tests. He made a rehab start for Class A Lakeland on April 21, and he started for Class AA Erie on April 26.

RHP Jeremy Bonderman (right rib removal, blood clot surgery in June 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 30. He won't return until he nudges his fastball back up 90 mph on a consistent basis.
