Detroit Tigers Roster Report 2009-04-25
The roles in Detroit's bullpen are beginning to be more sharply defined. RHP Fernando Rodney has locked down the closer's role but his setup man has yet to be established. It largely has been LHP Bobby Seay due to matchups but rookie RHP Ryan Perry has also worked some late innings (mostly in non-save situations). RHP Juan Rincon appears to be at the bottom of the pile, while LHP Nate Robertson works middle innings where left-handed batters predominate. RHP Eddie Bonine is the long man, while RHP Brandon Lyon works a variety of roles. A change looms this weekend when RHP Joel Zumaya comes off the disabled list.

--RHP Rick Porcello got a couple of pitches up Friday night and it cost him three runs. 3B Mark Teahen cracked a two-run home run in the first on a fastball up and away, then in the second inning 2B Alberto Callaspo pulled a fastball that was up and over the middle of the plate over the right field fence. But then Porcello gave a glimpse of his possibilities by retiring the next 10 batters he faced. Porcello only gave up four hits in six innings and one of his five runs was unearned. "He's still a little green with the curve ball but that's coming," manager Jim Leyland said. "His changeup was very good at times. He learned a great lesson; he's a bright kid. I take a real positive from this outing. I was actually very pleased with his performance, really."

--LHP Nate Robertson made his first appearance in nearly two weeks Friday night, getting four outs and allowing one run. Robertson is being used primarily as a long man out of the bullpen and Detroit starters have been working into the seventh inning or later on a fairly regular basis lately. He warmed up once in Anaheim but did not get into the game.

--CF Curtis Granderson saw his seven-game hitting streak come to an end Friday night. He wasn't alone, though, because only two Tigers got hits off RHP Zach Greinke. Granderson's average dropped to .265 but he'd been hitting under .220 before the streak. "The big thing," Granderson said before the game, "was not panicking, realizing we were only two weeks into the season, understanding that it's going to come together in time."

--3B Brandon Inge has five errors in 16 games this season after making just one last year in the 113 games he played at various positions. Inge has been hitting (his average is now .304 after an 0-for-2 Friday) and most of his errors this year have come on throws he made attempting to make plays most third basemen would not make.

--RHP Joel Zumaya is scheduled to be activated from the disabled list in time for Saturday's game in Kansas City. "Our people in Toledo say he's ready for the big leagues," said Manager Jim Leyland. Detroit has not announced who will be trimmed to make room for Zumaya but the likely candidates include RHP Eddie Bonine and RHP Juan Rincon. Leyland said Zumaya would be used "somewhere from the sixth inning on. But I'll have to take a look at him and see what he looks like."

RHP Joel Zumaya (right shoulder soreness) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He began a rehab assignment with Class A Lakeland on April 11, and he moved to Class AAA Toledo on April 17. He will be activated April 25 or April 26.

DH/OF Marcus Thames (left ribcage muscle strain) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 19. He won't begin any physical activity for two to four weeks, and he will need a rehab assignment before returning to the Tigers.

LHP Dontrelle Willis (anxiety disorder) went on the 15-day disabled list March 29. The disorder was diagnosed through blood tests. He made a rehab start for Class A Lakeland on April 21, and he is scheduled to start for Class AA Erie on April 26.

RHP Jeremy Bonderman (right rib removal, blood clot surgery in June 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 30. He won't return until he nudges his fastball back up 90 mph on a consistent basis.
