Detroit Tigers Roster Report 2009-04-10

Detroit Tigers Roster Report 2009-04-10
The Tigers neared the end of spring training the same as they entered -- with unanswered questions about the state of the pitching staff. After RHPs Justin Verlander, Edwin Jackson and Armando Galarraga, the club had no rotation candidate without significant question marks. RHP Jeremy Bonderman (injured), LHP Dontrelle Willis (control problems, anxiety disorder), LHP Nate Robertson (no fastball, inconsistent slider) and rookie RHP Rick Porcello (great stuff, no experience) all had issues. The bullpen was also unsettled from top to bottom. The defense will be improved with the addition of SS Adam Everett and the return to third of Brandon Inge, and the club should score enough runs. Robertson showed late signs of adapting to a Kenny Rogers style of pitching, which would help a great deal. Porcello and fellow rookie RHP Ryan Perry made the club.

PLAYER NEWS:

--LF Marcus Thames made his first start of the season in the outfield Thursday and tripled to the opposite field. Thames is slotted second in the batting order under manager Jim Leyland's thinking that a power hitter batting after the leadoff hitter can often jump-start the offense. He will be Detroit's primary DH this season but should also see some action in the outfield.

--C Matt Treanor made his first start of the season and struck out three times. Treanor also hit into a double play, but on the plus side called a nice game in guiding rookie RHP Rick Porcello through his first major league start. Treanor will see limited action spelling C Gerald Laird, mostly against left-handed pitching.

--RHP Juan Rincon wasn't overwhelming in his first appearance of the season Tuesday and didn't fare all that well Thursday in his second. Rincon entered with two outs in the sixth and gave up a two-run home run to SS Marco Scutaro. It was getting the third out in his first appearance that also caused problems. Scutaro hit a 90 mph fastball on a 3-2 pitch that was right down the heart of the plate. Rincon also fired an 89 mph fastball on a full count in the ninth that went for a double. He had a solid spring to make the Tigers' roster as a non-roster invitee following two poor seasons with three teams.

--INF Carlos Guillen got his second game at DH with the team playing on Toronto's artificial turf. The field gives Guillen's hamstrings problems, so manager Jim Leyland is prone to using him as the DH on non-grass surfaces. Guillen had two hits.

--RHP Joel Zumaya will begin a rehabilitation assignment Saturday with high Class A Lakeland, GM Dave Dombrowski said. Zumaya threw 43 pitches in his last outing, in an extended spring training game. He will return to Detroit's roster as soon as he shows he can pitch consecutive games with no physical problems.

--CF Curtis Granderson missed most of last April with a broken finger, but he has nothing broken this year. Granderson hit his second home run of the season and, impressively, it was an opposite-field blow off a left-handed pitcher. Granderson also singled and is hitting .313 in the young season.

MEDICAL WATCH:

LHP Dontrelle Willis (anxiety disorder) went on the 15-day disabled list March 29. The disorder was diagnosed through blood tests, and there was no timetable for his return. Willis, for his part, didn't understand the diagnosis and said he felt fine.

RHP Joel Zumaya (right shoulder soreness) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 27. He will begin a rehab assignment with Class A Lakeland on April 11, and he will stay in the minors until he shows he can pitch back-to-back games successfully.

RHP Jeremy Bonderman (right rib removal, blood clot surgery in June 2008) went on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to March 30. He won't return until he nudges his fastball back up 90 mph on a consistent basis.
