Detroit Tigers Notes, Quotes 2008-08-29

Detroit Tigers Notes, Quotes 2008-08-29
--RHP Francis Beltran, designated for assignment Tuesday to make room for RHP Chris Lambert, was outrighted by the Tigers to their Class AAA farm club in Toledo. Beltran compiled a 1-0 record and 4.85 ERA in 11 games over two stints with the Tigers.

--DH Gary Sheffield looked as if he might have it going again with an eight-game hitting streak recently. But since the streak ended, Sheffield has gone without a hit in four straight games. Overall he is batting .225 with 13 home runs and 42 RBIs. Manager Jim Leyland still believes Sheffield will help the club next season.

--RHP Freddy Garcia had an interested audience Thursday night when he pitched three shutout innings for Class AAA Toledo. Manager Jim Leyland spent the day in Toledo, first playing a little golf and then joining up with some of his coaches to watch and evaluate Garcia. Leyland wanted to see Garcia in person because a decision must be made whether to bring him up in September and whether to try to work out a contract with him for 2009. "That decision hasn't been made," Leyland said. "I've discussed that with (GM) Dave Dombrowski, and right now that's a total question mark." Garcia allowed two hits, and he struck out four without walking a batter.

--RHP Joel Zumaya doesn't think he'll pitch again this season for Detroit, but his pitching coach, Chuck Hernandez, is more optimistic. Zumaya didn't pick up a ball for 12 days after going on the disabled list when scar tissue broke loose in his last outing but he played catch Tuesday and Wednesday on flat ground.

"We are trying to re-create good habits," Hernandez said. "More importantly than the tossing (the ball), I'm hoping that (his) thought process is right. Right now, he's frustrated. He wants to play.

"I was very encouraged by the signs we got while he was pitching (this year) that said he's going to be OK. He just wasn't ready to handle four or five times a week yet. I hope he understands that you have to keep going through these peaks and valleys."

Zumaya told FSN Detroit, the club's cable TV outlet, he was more interested in being healthy for 2009 and didn't think he'd pitch in a game this year. He would, he said, like to face some hitters in simulated game situations before the season ends.

--1B/3B Jeff Larish is among six players the Tigers are sending to play for the Mesa Solar Sox of the Arizona Fall League. Larish is being sent to get steady action at third base, a position he has played extensively since his freshman year at Arizona State. Also slated to play for Mesa is OF Clete Thomas, who opened the season with the Tigers and probably will be called back for a third stint with the Tigers next month.

BY THE NUMBERS: 5 -- Consecutive 100-RBI seasons by Miguel Cabrera after his 28th home run of the season Aug. 23 accounted for his 100th run driven in of the season. The 25-year-old didn't make it to the century mark in RBIs his rookie season of 2003 because he was brought up midway through the year but has driven in 100 every year since.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I'll probably have to do some changes in the off-season. I've got right around 1,000 big league innings, and at some point you've got to adjust. I'm not getting any younger (he'll turn 31 on Sept. 3), and I have to start thinking about how the body changes and tailor something that is going to work for me. I have to do everything I possibly can to maintain what I'm capable of going out there and doing. We're going to look into that. I might have less (muscular) flexibility than anyone on the team." -- LHP Nate Robertson, reflecting on the disappointing season that saw him removed from the rotation last week.
