Detroit Tigers Notes, Quotes 2008-06-30
--C Dane Sardinha, hitless in his only other 11 major league at-bats, tripled with runners at the corners and two outs in the sixth inning Sunday to drive in the tying and winning runs. Sardinha laced a 1-0 fastball into the gap in left center and both runners scored without a play. Sardinha also threw out CF Willy Taveras of Colorado trying to steal, the second time in the series the National League's leading base-stealer had been thrown out running. "I'm just going to go back in the clubhouse and keep quiet," Sardinha said. His previous at-bat Sardinha had bounced into a double play with runners on first and third and one out.

--RHP Todd Jones bounced back from his first blown save of the season the night before to record his 15th save of the year Sunday. Jones wasn't pounded but he gave up four runs and three two-out hits Saturday, only avoiding a loss when Detroit rallied for two runs in the bottom of the ninth for a 7-6 win. Sunday he came in to open the ninth and retired three straight batters on a mixture of fastballs and curves low in the strike zone.

--LHP Kenny Rogers made a nice adjustment after the third inning Sunday and recovered to win his sixth game in 11 decisions. "He bent but never broke," Manager Jim Leyland said. "It looked like they were sitting on soft stuff early but he started to pound some balls inside, then he went back outside to get some outs." Rogers also participated in a 3-6-1 double play and caught a bullet line drive for an out. "I don't know another pitcher in baseball that could have caught that line drive by (Matt) Holliday," Leyland said.

--RF Clete Thomas collected two more hits to left field Sunday and made an excellent slide to score a run in Detroit's 4-3 victory over Colorado. The left-handed hitting Thomas does an excellent job of going the other way on pitches from the middle out and is hitting .333 as a part-time player. Thomas singled in the first and scored from second on a hit to left field, making a nice inside slide to avoid a tag try at the plate. His playing time figures to go way up with the loss of RF Magglio Ordonez to an injury for two weeks, with OF Matt Joyce also probable to get some playing time. Joyce is a left-handed hitter, too.

--RF Magglio Ordonez was placed on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with a pulled right oblique and lat muscle suffered in the first inning Saturday night. He told reporters the pain increased overnight. Ordonez, batting .307 with 12 home runs and 50 RBIs, had not missed a game this season. "I don't want to take a chance," said Ordonez, third Tiger this month to go on the DL due to an oblique muscle pull. "You know when it is not going to be OK, and it is going to be a miracle if you feel better. "Sheff (Gary Sheffield) told me, 'You've got to take care of it.'"

--OF Matt Joyce was recalled from Class AAA Toledo on Sunday to replace injured RF Magglio Ordonez on the Detroit roster. The left-handed hitting Joyce, who last week had seven RBIs in a game for the Mud Hens, is making his second tour of duty with the Tigers this season. He played 18 games in May, batting .200 with five home runs and 10 RBI. He will probably get some starts for Ordonez but likely will play behind OF Clete Thomas.

--RHP Freddy Dolsi retired all six batters he faced, three on strikeouts Sunday, as he continues to come through in pressure situations for Detroit. "He impressed me a lot when he went through that one part of the order like he did," manager Jim Leyland said of his rookie.

--IF Ramon Santiago will begin a rehab assignment Monday with Class AAA Toledo with an eye toward returning to Detroit later in the week. Santiago has been out since early June with a left shoulder separation.

--LHP Dontrelle Willis was scheduled to pitch two relief innings Sunday night in a rehab appearance for high Class A Lakeland of the Florida State League. Willis had not pitched in a game since he was sent to Lakeland nearly three weeks ago in an effort to regain his ability to throw strikes. The Tigers are trying to smooth out his mechanics, lessen his movement, to help him gets his confidence back.

BY THE NUMBERS: 3 -- Pitchers since 2000 to allow at least 11 hits in a game without allowing an earned run after LHP Nate Robertson worked 6 1/3 innings June 26 and gave St. Louis just an unearned run in Detroit's 3-2, 10-inning victory.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Five-hundred (.500) is not a magic number. It's not what we are shooting for. But you've got to get back to that (.500) before you can do anything else." -- Tigers' manager Jim Leyland, after Detroit reached 40-40 on Saturday night thanks to a 16-4 run.
