Detroit Tigers Notes, Quotes 2009-05-09
--RHP Justin Verlander has allowed just one run in his last three starts after hurling a two-hit shutout Friday night at Cleveland for his third straight victory. Verlander fanned 11 Indians for the second straight start but this time he recorded the fourth complete game and third shutout of his career. He started off throwing fastballs clocked at 92-94 in the first inning and he was trying to blow 98-99 mph fastballs by CF Grady Sizemore in the ninth. He also mixed in some off-the-table curves in his two-walk performance. "Verlander's performance was just unbelievable," manager Jim Leyland said. "(CF Curtis) Granderson's was just an athletic play but that was unbelievable, too. But Verlander had to do it over nine innings."

--2B Placido Polanco continues to take advantage of pitchers trying to work him inside. That's been the pattern for more than two years as teams feel Polanco goes the other way with the pitch so much they're better off crowding him off the plate. So Polanco responds by yanking inside pitches to left. He doubled for the 13th time Friday night, off LHP Cliff Lee at Cleveland. He doubled the night before off LHP Mark Buehrle in Chicago, yanking the ball down the left field line.

--C Dane Sardinha made his second start of the week Friday night, and curiously enough it was to catch RHP Justin Verlander again. Sardinha was behind the plate Sunday when Verlander outdueled Cleveland LHP Cliff Lee. Verlander's turn came up Friday night -- against Lee again -- so manager Jim Leyland decided not to mess with success and kept the combination intact.

BY THE NUMBERS: 2 -- Career grand slams for SS Adam Everett after hitting a home run with the bases loaded Saturday against Cleveland. Everett's only other slam came for Houston against Cincinnati on July 9, 2003.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I can't stand the Yankees, man, and I'm going to go right after them. There are little things about them I can't stand. They're just the Yankees." -- RHP Joel Zumaya, returning from the disabled list to work two scoreless innings against the Yankees on April 29, his third game of the season.
