Tigersground.com | Detroit Tigers News, tigers Scores, Game Recaps & Commentary - --RHP Rick Porcello took advantage of some between-starts brushing up Tuesday night and worked a strong seven innings to win his second major league game. Porcello showed much more finesse with his curve, kept his sinker down in the zone and worked in an occasional changeup to keep Minnesota hitters off stride. He got easy groundballs as Detroit turned three double plays and weak flyouts. Porcello threw 87 pitches.
--OF Clete Thomas was recalled from Class AAA Toledo on Tuesday to help give Detroit some life and energy at the top of the batting order. Thomas was placed third in the batting order and played right field so Magglio Ordonez could DH. Thomas was only hitting .236 with Toledo but he got a single, double and triple his first three times up for Detroit. The left-handed hitter may not see everyday action, but he will at least hit against right-handed pitching. He played well in limited duty for Detroit last season until having to undergo Tommy John surgery in September. --C Matt Treanor's bad news is likely good news for C Dane Sardinha. Treanor, backup to C Gerald Laird, underwent surgery last week to remove a bone spur from his right hip, and the reserve probably will miss the rest of the season. Detroit brought Sardinha up to take Treanor's place on the roster and is now the primary backup to Laird. Manager Jim Leyland likes Sardinha's game despite the fact he isn't much of a hitter.
BY THE NUMBERS: 2 -- Career grand slams for SS Adam Everett after hitting a home run with the bases loaded Saturday against Cleveland. Everett's only other slam came for Houston against Cincinnati on July 9, 2003.
QUOTE TO NOTE: "I can't stand the Yankees, man, and I'm going to go right after them. There are little things about them I can't stand. They're just the Yankees." -- RHP Joel Zumaya, returning from the disabled list to work two scoreless innings against the Yankees on April 29, his third game of the season.
