Detroit Tigers Notes, Quotes 2008-05-30
--OF Clete Thomas figures to be used mostly as a defensive replacement, at least initially. Thomas was brought back when OF Matt Joyce was optioned back to Toledo after Wednesday night's game. Thomas joined Detroit in Seattle on Friday night. "We really like him," manager Jim Leyland of Joyce, who hit five home runs in a span of nine games but was struggling against a steady stream of breaking balls. "He has a future, he did a good job, but if you're going to have someone sitting around, you'd rather have a little more speed. Thomas provides that." Thomas struggled at Class AAA Toledo when he went first went down but has raised his average to .242.

--1B Jeff Larish will see his first major league action Friday night as Detroit's designated hitter. Manager Jim Leyland suggested the power-hitting Larish will bat seventh initially. "There's not a lot of pressure on him to start with," Leyland said. "If he can hit, it helps a lot. If he can't, it doesn't mean much. He's getting an opportunity." The addition of Larish gives Detroit three left-handed hitters in its lineup, including CF Curtis Granderson and switch-hitting 3B Carlos Guillen. Larish, who will play only against right-handers, hit .277 with 16 homers and 43 RBIs in 53 games for Class AAA Toledo this season.

--RHP Denny Bautista made his third rehab appearance for Class AAA Toledo, but it didn't go nearly as well as his first two. "The report was not good," manager Jim Leyland said. "Two walks, a hit batter, half strikes, half balls. He'll pitch down there again."

--3B Carlos Guillen is expected to return to Detroit's lineup Friday for the start of a weekend series in Seattle. Guillen missed Wednesday's game and Detroit was off Thursday. "I'm going to stand him for two days," Leyland said in deference to Guillen's hemorrhoid condition. "I can use him as a hitter, but we need to let that quiet down. So with a day off, I chose this time." Guillen also has good numbers against Seattle starter RHP Carlos Silva, going 16-for-31 with three home runs and 12 RBI.

--LHP Nate Robertson hasn't pitched at Seattle's Safeco Field since turning in seven shutout innings April 22, 2006. But last year he did not fare well against the Mariners at all, allowing a total of 17 hits and 10 earned runs in 9 1/3 innings with seven walks and 13 strikeouts. He will open the series Friday night. He has featured a better breaking ball and the ability to pitch inside effectively in two of his last three starts.

BY THE NUMBERS: 98 -? Miles per hour RHP Joel Zumaya threw in his first competitive situation of the year, an extended spring training contest in which he pitched an inning.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Look, this team needs to realize that this guy took on Barry Bonds. He'd run every one of us out of town. You're just better off if you don't cross him. And I think he relayed that message 100 percent. You just don't mess with him. It's not that hard. He doesn't ask a whole lot." -? RHP Todd Jones after his manager, Jim Leyland, challenged his players to "look in the mirror" if they wanted to blame somebody for the team's struggles.
