Detroit Tigers Notes, Quotes 2008-05-27
--LHP Kenny Rogers turned in his finest outing of the season Monday at Anaheim, pitching seven innings of shutout ball. Rogers threw 98 pitches and worked out of several minor jams in his five-hit outing. He was living on the corners and able to work the ball in on right-handers and away to lefties with success.

--RHP Zach Miner wasn't totally effective Monday, but he did work two scoreless relief innings. Miner pitched the eighth and ninth and allowed three baserunners but righted himself each time he seemed headed for trouble. Miner's sinker has been particularly effective recently as he's sacrificed a little speed off his fastball in exchange for greater accuracy.

--RHP Freddy Dolsi pitched two shutout innings Monday night but couldn't make it through a third. Dolsi has a good fastball and decent control and it helped him get through two innings. But he gave up a leadoff single and a one-out single in the 12th before being relieved following an intentional walk to load the bases. Manager Jim Leyland admitted recently Dolsi might be a overmatched in the majors at this time but he still likes the rookie's chances of being a decent relief pitcher.

--DH Gary Sheffield has been hit by injury again. Sheffield left Monday's game against the Angels with what the Tigers called left oblique spasms. He grounded out to short his second time up, ending the third inning. But as he left the batter's box, Sheffield slowed up and then stopped about halfway to first. He was clutching his left side as he headed into the dugout, where he was tended to by trainer Kevin Rand. Sheffield has dealt with shoulder issues for much of the year following offseason surgery to repair a torn labrum. There was no immediate timetable for his return. He was replaced by UT Ryan Raburn.

--LHP Bobby Seay didn't have it Monday night. Seay stayed below the strike zone on each of the four pitches he threw, walking in the winning run with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the 12th. Seay was brought in to face a left-handed hitter and couldn't throw a strike to give his team a chance to turn an inning-ending double play.

--RHP Denny Bautista, out since May 3 with shoulder tendinitis, is scheduled for a two-inning rehab appearance for Toledo on Tuesday night. The reliever pitched one perfect inning for Detroit's Class AAA farm club Saturday night in his first rehab outing, striking out one batter.

--RHPs Joel Zumaya and Fernando Rodney threw in extended spring training games Monday at Detroit's Lakeland, Fla., spring training base. Zumaya topped out at 95 mph, not quite the 98 mph of his first outing, but he has consistently clocked in the mid-90s. Rodney approached the mid-90s again with a peak of 94. Neither is likely to begin a rehab assignment right away. Detroit GM Dave Dombrowski is going to the club's spring training base this week for pre-draft meetings and a first-hand look at rehabbing Zumaya and Rodney. Rodney, returning from right shoulder tendinitis, and Zumaya, recovering from shoulder surgery, are pitching extended spring training games but will soon be ready to work minor league games on their way back to Detroit. "Were just keeping our fingers crossed now that there's no setbacks, because those guys are looking good," said manager Jim Leyland. "Dave's going down to see them. I'll be glad when I get to see them." The organization meeting is to set the franchise's draft plans for next month's free agent selections.

BY THE NUMBERS: 98 -? Miles per hour RHP Joel Zumaya threw in his first competitive situation of the year, an extended spring training contest in which he pitched an inning.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "Look, this team needs to realize that this guy took on Barry Bonds. He'd run every one of us out of town. You're just better off if you don't cross him. And I think he relayed that message 100 percent. You just don't mess with him. It's not that hard. He doesn't ask a whole lot." -? RHP Todd Jones after his manager, Jim Leyland, challenged his players to "look in the mirror" if they wanted to blame somebody for the team's struggles.
