Looks like Detroit will have a three-man closer rotation for at least the next week.

Manager Jim Leyland reiterated Friday he won't be using Joel Zumaya in back-to-back games, at least until he puts up a track record of no soreness or tightness in his right arm.

"I'm going to watch him, watch him real close," Leyland said. "I'll be careful with him."

Leyland also said he wouldn't use right-hander Fernando Rodney in the game under any circumstances after watching him get the last four outs at Chicago against the White Sox for his second save of the season.

That meant right-hander Kyle Farnsworth, who muffed his first opportunity to earn a save with Detroit earlier in the week, would have been the Friday night closer had the Tigers needed one.

So with Leyland opting not to use Rodney and Zumaya in back-to-back games as a rule, it means Detroit will sometimes need a third closer.

Right-hander Todd Jones is scheduled to come off the disabled list in a week and depending upon how he throws, he could even find himself back in the mix for closer.

Leyland said ideally he wants to have one reliever step up and another become the closer. Until then, he will go with who is available in any given game.

ATHLETICS 4, TIGERS 2: A two-run home run by LF Marcus Thames in the second inning Friday night was all the offense sagging Detroit could muster in falling for the seventh time in eight games. LHP Kenny Rogers gave up three runs in the fifth inning on just one base hit out of the infield. He worked seven innings and allowed six hits, including a solo home run to Emil Brown in the sixth. Rookie RHP Freddy Dolsi finished the game with two scoreless innings for the Tigers.
