Detroit Tigers Inside Pitch 2008-06-28
Lots of strikes, lots of groundballs and lots of balls in play seem to be an effective combination for rookie right-hander Eddie Bonine.

The Tigers have gotten good results from their latest substitute starter, who is 2-0 after three starts.

He pitched a solid game Friday night for Detroit, allowing just five hits, not walking anybody and striking out two Colorado batters.

Bonine recorded strike one on most batters, had a sharper breaking ball than he normally does and got 17 groundball outs from 16 batters (one was a double play). He only went to a three-ball count on four hitters as he threw strikes and made the Rockies hit the ball.

Bonine doesn't feature a dominating pitch, just three that work. He has to hit corners and keep away from the middle of the plate, but so far he's mostly been able to do that. He gave up six runs to the Dodgers in his first start but won it, allowed just two in his second and got a no-decision, and Friday night gave up one to win his second decision.

Not having a dominating pitch means Bonine must rely on a deceptive delivery and getting late movement on his pitches to succeed.

He was pushed around his last four starts for Class AAA Toledo but has adjusted well to pitching in the majors so far.

TIGERS 7, ROCKIES 1: CF Curtis Granderson had four hits for the second game in a row Friday to extend his career-best hitting streak to 15 games. RHP Eddie Bonine allowed slumping Colorado just five hits and got 17 groundball outs through keeping the ball low in the strike zone. Rookie LF Clete Thomas had three hits, and six Detroit batters drove in a run.
