"You usually don't finish the way you start," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "I'm looking forward to having a problem of trying to figure out how to put our pitching together."
Leyland had to figure out how to work lefty Clay Rapada into his left-handed bullpen members, Nate Robertson and Bobby Seay, when he was brought up recently.
Then when Rapada was sent down and both infielder Jeff Larish and outfielder Clete Thomas were brought up, the manager had to figure out how they would now fit.
"I'm loving it," Leyland said after Thomas and Larish were added. "I don't sleep much at night. I love action. And this is action.
"It's fun right now. The bottom line is you have to win games. But I'm excited. There's a lot of anticipation with young players playing, and I think it's good. I love action. It's good."
Fitting left-hander Dontrelle Willis into the rotation won't be a big deal because right-hander Zach Miner was only holding down the fort for the southpaw or righty Jeremy Bonderman anyway.
Deciding how to reconfigure the bullpen will involve some late-night chats prior to Wednesday's move.
TIGERS 5, INDIANS 3: RHP Rick Porcello checked Cleveland on five hits and a run over five innings Sunday and Detroit completed a sweep of the slumping Indians. DH Jeff Larish hit a leadoff home run in the second to trigger a four-run inning. SS Adam Everett added a sacrifice fly and CF Curtis Granderson hit a two-run single. Everett added an RBI single in the fourth, the 25th by Detroit shortstops this season for the major league lead in that category. "Sometimes you're fortunate enough to catch an outstanding hitting team when they're not hitting. I'm sure they're not swinging the bats the way they will be. The next time we see them, they might be hitting the ball all over the place."
