Detroit Tigers Inside Pitch 2009-05-08
Dontrelle Willis is on his way back to the Tigers, and Jeremy Bonderman might not be far behind.

The bullpen will be under pressure because a cut or two will have to be made. The rotation has been doing fairly well.

Willis will be activated Wednesday to start in Minnesota in search of his first victory since the Tigers acquired him from Florida two winters ago. Zach Miner goes to the bullpen, and a move will be made with another reliever at that time.

The most convenient move would be to option rookie Ryan Perry to the minors because of his inexperience. But that's a longshot because he's making remarkable progress.

The real tough decision will come late this month or early in June -- if and when Bonderman is deemed ready to return to Detroit.

He will not go to the bullpen. And the convenient move of optioning rookie Rick Porcello to the minors probably won't happen, not as long as he turns in gems like the one he threw Tuesday night against Minnesota. He showed three quality pitches, mixed them up and had control of each of them.

There will be pressure on the other starters to produce, mostly Willis. Sure, the Tigers have a lot of money tied up in the veteran. But they aren't going to keep pitching him if the other starters are better.

"I'm looking forward to having problems putting everything together," manager Jim Leyland said. "It's fun right now. The bottom line is you have to win games. But I'm excited. There's a lot of anticipation with young players playing, and I think it's good. I love action. It's good."

WHITE SOX 6, TIGERS 0: RHP Armando Galarraga was roughed up for five runs in the first inning Thursday, and that was all Chicago LHP Mark Buehrle needed, as he set down the first 19 batters in order.

The Tigers only produced three hits. They left the bases loaded in the seventh after 2B Placido Polanco doubled to left to become the first Detroit baserunner. The Tigers also stranded two in the ninth against RHP Bobby Jenks.

Galarraga only allowed six hits, but his two walks in the first inning both scored. Rookie RHP Ryan Perry pitched two hitless innings of relief and showed a productive slider to go with his fastball.
