Detroit Tigers Inside Pitch 2009-05-06

Detroit Tigers Inside Pitch 2009-05-06
Tigers manager Jim Leyland has mentioned for a couple of years that he felt center fielder Curtis Granderson would one day bat in the middle of the lineup. That day came Tuesday.

"I have a totally different lineup today," Leyland announced before Detroit took its revamped batting order out and beat Minnesota 9-0.

He took Granderson out of the leadoff spot and plopped him fifth, hoping to provide cleanup hitter Miguel Cabrera with protection he hasn't been getting (not that he needs it).

He inserted Josh Anderson into left field and put the speedster at the top of the batting order. Second baseman Placido Polanco remained second, but outfielder Clete Thomas was brought up from the minors and hit third.

Magglio Ordonez was used as the DH Tuesday and spotted sixth, the first time with the Tigers he has not batted third or fourth.

Third baseman Brandon Inge was seventh, catcher Gerald Laird eighth and shortstop Ramon Santiago ninth.

Detroit put left fielder/DH Carlos Guillen on the disabled list to get his sore right shoulder and Achilles tendon healthy, and the team sent lefty Clay Rapada back to Class AAA Toledo.

"I just don't think you can just keep waiting and waiting and waiting," Leyland said. "If things really aren't working and you've got a couple guys struggling, change it up a little bit.

"We're just trying to get something going. We're trying to shake it up a bit and get something going. And I obviously tried to get a little speed up top."

The Tigers have been scuffling offensively. Ordonez has just two extra-base hits, both home runs. Guillen was stuck at .200, and Laird has cooled off.

"We won't win if we don't get Guillen and Magglio going," Leyland said.

Anderson won't be in the lineup Wednesday because the Chicago White Sox are scheduled to start left-hander Mark Buehrle. Outfielder Ryan Raburn will get those at-bats, but Leyland will have to choose another leadoff hitter.

TIGERS 9, TWINS 0: Rookie RHP Rick Porcello and two relievers combined on a five-hitter Tuesday night and Detroit's revamped batting order produced nine runs. Manager Jim Leyland yanked CF Curtis Granderson out of the leadoff spot and put him fifth, inserting OF Josh Anderson into leadoff playing left field. Granderson hit a home run and so did 1B Miguel Cabrera, both coming in the fourth. Anderson had an RBI single, and Thomas, who also doubled and singled, hit a two-run triple. Porcello was strong for seven innings, allowing just four hits with no walks and three strikeouts. LHP Nate Robertson pitched the eighth and RHP Juan Rincon the ninth.
