Detroit Tigers Inside Pitch 2009-05-01

Detroit Tigers Inside Pitch 2009-05-01
Ryan Perry keeps getting tested.

It's a series of pass-fail exams for the Tigers' 2008 first-round draft choice, but so far the good marks outweigh the bad.

Perry was tested Tuesday and failed. He came into a 0-0 game and was the first pitcher in a 10-run New York inning that brought the Yankees an 11-0 win.

Jim Leyland being Jim Leyland, the manager didn't waste any time in putting his hard-throwing future closer prospect back on the firing line.

Wednesday, Perry was brought into a game the Tigers trailed 8-1. He got two quick outs, then promptly walked the bases loaded.

"Rick (Knapp, the pitching coach,) said he was going to go get him," Leyland said. "I said, 'No, I want you to go talk to him. Let's give him a little challenge. That's one of the hottest lefties in the league (second baseman Robinson Cano) We can find out a little something here.'"

So Knapp went out to the mound with catcher Gerald Laird and told Perry to go right after Cano, who hit into an inning-ending forceout.

"He responded pretty well," Leyland said.

Perry has had bouts of wildness but has the stuff to pitch through them. True, he's walked 10 in 7 2/3 innings of work. But let's look at it another way: In 10 appearances he has given up a hit just three times and he's only been scored upon twice.

That stacks him up pretty well against other members of the bullpen.

"It's going to be a learning curve for these guys," Leyland said of Perry and fellow rookie right-hander Rick Porcello, "and we knew that coming in. That's just the way it is. We didn't expect either one of them to look like polished major league pitchers the first two or three weeks of the season."
