The Tigers outrighted Gary Glover and Dane Sardinha to Class AAA Toledo on Oct. 30 and officially confirmed they were buying out the 2009 option to shortstop Edgar Renteria's contract for $3 million. The moves left Detroit four under the 40-man roster limit.
Detroit may need an additional roster space depending upon the number of minor league players it will protect.
Jeremy Bonderman and Joel Zumaya will have to be taken off the 60-day disabled list and restored to the active roster.
Catcher Vance Wilson is also on the 60-day disabled list, but his contract expired after the World Series and he's almost certain to be waived. Wilson had a second Tommy John surgery this summer and won't be ready to return until at least late spring. The Tigers may end up signing him to a minor league deal.
The Tigers will get another vacancy when Todd Jones officially retires and possibly another when Kenny Rogers becomes a free agent. Rogers' return is problematic.
"In regard to player moves with other clubs," general manager Dave Dombrowski said, "you never know about that. Right now, we don't have anything close to being done."
The Tigers will probably add outfielder Wilkin Ramirez, one of their better hitting prospects, to their roster and may add reliever Guillermo Moscoso and others.
Last year Detroit did not add Randor Bierd, and he ended up pitching all season for Baltimore as a Rule 5 selection.
Rosters must be set by Nov. 20 for the Rule 5 draft.
Another consideration is the possible addition of free agents, such as a catcher or pitcher.
Glover and Sardinha elected to become free agents rather than accept their minor league assignments, but both could elect to return to the Tigers organization.
