AROUND THE BASES 2009-05-17

MLB: Washington 3B Ryan Zimmerman

Zimmerman's 30-game hitting streak came to an end Wednesday in San Francisco but not before he batted .382 with 11 doubles, eight homers, 26 RBI, 11 walks and 26 runs. Zimmerman came up one game short of the Expos/Nationals franchise record of 31 by Vladimir Guerrero in 1999.

Brewers : RHP Trevor Hoffman

Hoffman extended his streak of converted save opportunities to nine by finishing all three games of the sweep over Florida and the first game of the Cardinals series Saturday. Hoffman has not allowed a run in 10 innings this season.

Monday-Wednesday: Mets at Dodgers. Neither team has Manny now.

Tuesday-Thursday: Blue Jays at Red Sox. Battle atop AL East.

Friday-Sunday: Phillies at Yankees. New York wants that trophy.

Friday-Sunday: Angels at Dodgers. Sharing the town with Lakers.

The Brewers' three-city, nine-game trip, which had a scheduled break Monday until rain forced an extra day in St. Louis, resumes with a three-game series in Houston, the second trip to Minute Maid Park this season. Then it's off to Minnesota and the first interleague series of the year.

Philadelphia's Jayson Werth on Tuesday became only the ninth player since 1947 to steal second, third and home in the same inning. Werth did it in the seventh inning against the Dodgers, swiping home when catcher Russell Martin lobbed the ball back to reliever Ronald Belisario.

It was the first single-inning stolen base cycle since Colorado's Eric Young on June 30, 1996, also against the Dodgers. Among the seven other players to do it since 1947 was Milwaukee's Paul Molitor, who swiped three bags in the first inning on July 26, 1987, against Oakland.

Before being returned to the minors last week, Pittsburgh SS Brian Bixler struck out 18 times in 26 plate appearances. Including his time with the Pirates last season, Bixler has whiffed 54 times in 146 plate appearances.

Only one non-pitcher has struck out more times in the majors with 150 plate appearances or fewer. Outfielder Jackie Warner whiffed 55 times in 133 trips for the California Angels in 1966 and was never seen in the majors again.

If Bixler doesn't get called back up in 2009, he will have the most strikeouts in a season of any non-pitcher with at least 26 plate appearances. The record is shared by Ken Phelps, who whiffed 13 times in 23 plate appearances for Kansas City in 1981, and Chris Latham, who went down 13 times in 24 trips to the plate for Minnesota in 1999.
